Jennifer is licensed both by the state of MN and nationally to practice acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry from the U of M and her Master’s in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine from the New England School of Acupuncture in Boston. Jennifer is a professional member of the national infertility organization, RESOLVE, and has advanced training and specialized education in treating infertility and gynecological problems with Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine Originating in China over 3,500 years ago, acupuncture has recently gained in popularity in the U.S. as people seek more holistic healthcare. The focus of an acupuncture treatment is to restore the balance of Qi in the body. Any illness or disease can be defined as the imbalance of this energy or Qi. The insertion of hair-thin, sterile, stainless needles along specific points on the body helps to balance the flow of Qi and return the body to a healthy state. When the points are stimulated, the flow of Qi through pathways of energy (meridians) is facilitated, thereby initiating your body’s return to balance. Though you may be seeking treatment to help relieve such imbalances as pain, digestive upset, or infertility, during your visit, you will also receive the added benefit of a deeply relaxed state that is unique to receiving acupuncture. Acupuncture is very safe and free of side effects. Most people find the treatment relaxing and the needle insertion painless. The small diameter and contoured shape of the needle allow it to be inserted easily and painlessly. The number of treatments varies depending on how well you respond. The average is about 6 treatments during the first month and then once or twice a month for the next few months. Some people, however, respond very well and only need a few treatments. Chinese herbs are often used to complement acupuncture treatments. I make custom formulas to specifically address the issues of each patient. The use of a Chinese herbal formula can sustain the effects of an acupuncture treatment in between visits, and is a great way to supplement one’s path toward wellness. Services Initial 60 minute consultation and treatment $105 Follow-up appointment $85 6-Session Package $450 Herbal consultation $60 Custom Herbal formula ~$25/week Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Jen Johnson (infertility and Women’s health) jjacupuncturist@gmail.com Acupuncture, Women’s Health, & Fertility Women of all ages can benefit from acupuncture. For young women beginning to menstruate, acupuncture can ease PMS, cramps and mood swings. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help treat other symptoms associated with PMS such as headaches, dizziness and irritability. Endometriosis and fibroids are also commonly treated with acupuncture and herbs. For pregnant women, acupuncture and Chinese herbs are a gentle, prescription-free option for treating many issues during pregnancy including morning sickness, abdominal pain, constipation and post-partum depression. Much help can be found by treating infertility issues with acupuncture. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can also help during the transition of menopause. Treatment can relieve the discomfort of hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia. As the popularity and success of acupuncture treatment for fertility becomes more widespread, more people are looking to Chinese medicine and acupuncture to treat infertility. While infertility may appear to be the main issue it is actually a manifestation of a deeper underlying imbalance. Acupuncture and/or herbal medicine treatments, will start working right away to get your body back to its optimum balance and ready for conception. Whether you are trying on your own or involved in an IVF cycle, the overall goal of treatment is to prepare the body for conception and a healthy, full term pregnancy. In a recent article, Prevention magazine published a review by researchers at the Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York on acupuncture’s effect on female fertility. They found that acupuncture helps to: Regulate hormones and ovulation Improve ovarian function – more follicles and better quality eggs Increase blood flow to the uterus – improve chances of implantation Regulate menstrual cycle Reduce stress, anxiety and promote relaxation Acupuncture treatments can be especially beneficial to women undergoing modern fertility treatments such as IUI, IVF and donor cycles. Numerous studies have shown acupuncture treatments to increase the rate of pregnancy in women undergoing IVF treatments. Above all, the best thing about acupuncture is that there are no side effects. In fact, acupuncture will help to reduce any side effects you might be experiencing with IVF. Wherever you are on the path to pregnancy, acupuncture can help increase your chances of becoming pregnant. Fertility Treatment Plan Acupuncture treatments – schedule determined by your cycle Dietary recommendations Lifestyle suggestions Chinese herbs – as needed Start acupuncture treatments up to 3 months before you try to conceive. Women’s follicles are recruited about 3 months before being chosen for ovulation. The quality of the egg is influenced during this 3-month period, so acupuncture treatments today will affect the quality of your eggs up to 3 months from now. If you are currently in an IVF cycle or are planning an IVF cycle: Acupuncture treatments are scheduled according to where you are in the cycle. The acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas are designed to complement the IVF cycle and reduce any side effects. Start treatments a least one month before your scheduled transfer date. Starting treatment early gives your body a chance to develop healthier eggs. Read the wonderful things that are being said about Jennifer.
