Sage Smudging 101

Smudging herbs is an ancient tradition that dates back thousands of years to early tribes in the Americas. Smudging is practiced to purify and cleanse living or working spaces, or to bless individuals with the power of herbal smoke. At SATTVA, our therapists can use it at the end of your session to enhance your experience.

What is sage smudging
Smudging is a spiritual process that uses the power of your intention, combined with sacred smoke, to cleanse, heal, and restore people, animals, objects, and homes to a higher and more beautiful vibration. Different herbs serve different purposes; sage is specifically used to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety.

What are the benefits
Research is showing that sage can also be used to benefit physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It can help you feel grounded, positive, calm, and creative. Smudging can also help remove bacteria from the air, repel insects and purify your home.

How to smudge
Light the end of your smudge stick and let it burn for a while until it starts to smolder. Then blow out the flame so it produces smoke. To smudge your spirit, start by stating your intention for the clearing. Keeping the sage stick at an arm's length distance away from you, work your way up from your feet. Repeat your mantra as you go, envisioning the smoke is clearing you of any and all lingering low vibrations. If you are clearing your home, wave the smoke into all corners of each room, across doorways, and into shadow spaces. When done, run the stick under water and allow to dry on a towel for future use.
